Behind The Ink Finished (Documentary) & Evaluation
In this post i will be talking about the small five minuet documentary about tattooing and the socialism behind it. The tattoo documentary known as "Behind the ink".
The documentary production started in early April of 2014 the idea for this documentary was a simple but the subject was different to what you would expect. with the documentary being tattoos the audience would of expected to be an informative piece rather then it being a documentary based around the thoughts and opinions of people about the choices of getting a tattoo. The director of this project already had a tattoo himself but thought it would be best to get many different views on the subject so that the documentary did not seem biased. The documentary is a two sided discussion between those who want a tattoo, have a tattoo or don't like tattoos.
The filming started in mid April at a tattoo studio near the directors local area. He filmed himself getting a tattoo of a character from a video game and proceeded to speed up the footage.Later on he went back and filmed the shops exterior and interior for dramatic effect. Further more the style of the studio itself gave the audience and idea of stepping into another world as the studio had many different styles of art in the store all hand drawn by the artists who worked there.
However the director set up and interview with the tattoo artist but due to business reasons he was unable to attend leaveing the documentary without a good source of information. This completely changed the focus of the documentary from a behind this scenes look into a social experiment. With. With the idea of using tattoos as a social stand point the director was able to turn the tables on the documentary still sticking true to his original idea.
Interview were set up from a group of up to ten people the best interviews were selected and cut down into a small sequence. However rather then it being a back and fourth interview the director decided to ask one question the question he found most important to the documentary "what is your opinions on tattoos?".
Using clever editing he cut the other questions from the sequence creating a small montage of a variety of answers to the audience. Furthermore he kept the answers in check with his one important questions making sure the responses made sense.
He finally finished the documentary off with a speech about what his views on tattooing were and how tattoos make him feel as-well as cutting back and forth from the interviewees allowing them to say there names at the end of the documentary as a way of verbal credits.
The documentary is well thought out and has an interesting topic. As you can see through out the documentary the narrator is trying to inform you of the history of tattooing briefly so the audience do not loose interest as-well as showing shots of various pieces of art and historical images to keep the audience interested in the documentary. The shots used in this documentary are beautiful due to the fact that they are of a variety of different things and have a lot of colours and different art styles making the documentary eye catching. Through out the documentary the narrator talks about the process of tattooing and he him self decided to continue a tattoo he had wanted for over two years the tattoo was later finished in October of 2014 it is a full video game sleeve.
Another feature i liked about this documentary is the variety of people he used in the documentary to get a mixed view on the idea of getting a tattoo using people of different age ranges, backgrounds and education you were able to get a different stand point from each individual he interviewed he selected the people well as to make the documentary and unbiased documentary.
If any improvements were to be added i would say that the narrator would need to speak more clearly as he seemed under whelmed when he read the lines to the audience he would need a more professional up beat tone to his voice to keep the animation vibrant and colourful as the documentary itself is.
Furthermore i would like to of seen a completed tattoo in this documentary you do see time lapse footage of an outline but that is it this documentary would of grabbed me more if there was a time-lapse over a complete tattoo also taking a few months for it to fade to see its condition would of been brilliant as it would help determine if the people watching this would continue to get a tattoo.
In conclsuion i think the documentary was brilliant there were a few technical problems with some interviews and the narrators motivation but other then that it was a good documentary. The choice of music, the people he chose to interview and the structure of the documentary all worked well together to bring out a good piece of factual entertainment.
I would like to thank you for reading this evaluation and please watch "Behind the ink" and praise the director.

Pre-Production Techniques
Pre-Production Techniques
A TV factual has different needs to that of other productions due to the fact that a TV factual role is to inform the audience about a specific topic or historical event that has taken place. For example a TV factual known as crime watch in the UK on BBC the point of this factual is to inform the audience around the UK of viscous crimes that have taken place either in their local area or some where else in the UK. The effectiveness of this factual is that with the use of reenactments and archive footage as-well as photo identification it helps warn the public about these criminals.Furthermore it encourages them to tell the police about these criminals to ensure the safety of others in the community it is an effect way to catch criminals and a good way to inform the public as it shocks and scares them. However another example of factual would be an observational documentary.Mostly these are based around animals ,nature or endangering the echo system. The point of this type of factual is to inform the audience about the animals in any manner they would like this can varies form its habitat to its predators or how pollution is effecting the species of the animals. Often these documentaries are to raise awareness and raise money for charity to keep many animals from being hunted by poachers.
In the documentary i am currently in production of making it is a special interest documentary this means that it has a specific interest to a specific group of people there inst a genre to the documentary itself other then to inform the audience of a certain topic. The factual is about the socialism of tattoos and tattooing in the current generation we have today. The point of the factual is to inform the audience about the choice of getting a tattoo and how it can affect how people look at you in society. Using a voice over to inform the audience about the process, the journey and the views of people who want tattoos or have tattoos it is a two way discussion on how a tattoo can dramatically change your life and why people get tattoos in the first place as the process is both painful and permanent.
The production scale of this documentary is very small as i only have myself a single camera and a recorder to record interviews with many individuals from different backgrounds.
Compared to a big TV factual the difference is astounding as a company would fund this project and will air it when the factual is completed on a live television broadcast. To get extra funds the company will allow sponsorship or apply small ways of getting people involved with the program such as using "hashtag" on twitter as this is a current thing that TV companies do it also widens the number of people watching as twitter is a social media website that millions use per day. My documentary will be all done by myself with the tools i and equipment i have been given by my course. It will later be uploaded to Youtube an online video service where people around the world can watch it. It could possibly make money if the documentary was put up for motorization. This would allow people to put adds on my video and allow me get a small percentage of money and make more videos.
Deadlines are an important part of a factual as the company who funded this factual will give you a small timeline in which you have to complete the factual and then put it in a time slot so that it can be viewed by the public this can go from three months up to three years some factuals do recaps in which they go away for years and comeback to see the progression on how something has gone. This is a recurring series of factual that aren't broadcast for many years but are memorable as people are interested to see the transition over time.
i myself will have to take into account deadlines as i will be interviewing many people of variety ages and i will be taking up there time to get my documentary on track. There are two different types of documentation needed when making any sort of film or TV show these are time sheets and a shooting schedule so that you and people you are working with know when and where they needed to be also having written consent from them that they are in this factual is a big part as-well as they could argue later on they don't want to be in your production where as if you have documentation you can use the footage as they signed a contract. Using these pieces of paper work help add stability to your deadline and it will allow your production to go smoother as you have things in order and marks set for your production.
A producer of a factual takes many things into consideration before he makes a documentary one main focus is making a team or a crew of people to help film this project they must take into account there, skills, availability and cost as with the budget and deadline set they must abide by both of those things in order to make this production run as smoothly as possible. If the factual went onto a full hour show the size of the production team would increase dramatically. As the producers hire many types of people who have a set of specific skills for example Crime watch you would need, director, editor, sound technician, location manger, journalist and an assortment of actors. However if a production spreads over many departments it is better to set specific crews to different jobs for example a set of film crew would go to the incident in which a crime happened another group would prepare the actors give them directions then film the event after which the interviewer would interview and film the victim in a smaller crew so not to over whelm the traumatized individual.
I however am doing this documentary on my own i will have a few volunteers to help me get my equipment from location A to location be.but i will be doing the filming, editing and interviewing as well as the narrator-ting and intro effects to my production as my budget is currently zero i don't have money to acquire professionals.
The facilities needed to create a massive production for any type of film or show would be of considerable side for example you would need equipment such as microphones, cameras both video and standard SLR as well as lights and tripods,The building housing this equipment would require an editing sweet inside the confides of the building,The company could also have other technology like green screen or 3D animation if they are hoping to recreate a digital simulation of a past event such as Walking with the dinosaurs.
The things i would need in order to make my documentary have a structure would be a location that links to my subject in this case it would be a tattoo studio. I myself having a tattoo i decided to go back to where i had my tattoo done. As well as a location i would need to read up on my topic for this i will use the internet to look at the history of tattooing as well as the progression in how it has changed over the centuries. Furthermore i will be using cameras to record interviews with a variety of different people to get a stronger experience and a better response from peoples ideas on tattooing. With the use of a device known as a H2 recorder i will be able to record the interviewees responses in a much more clearer fashion as camera mics often don't pick up audio as clear as they should.
The people who will be contributing to my small production will be four interviewees James Wray-Lang a media technician in his early twenties at the age to legally get a tattoo and at the prime age to get one. Callum Hemmings a media student who has six tattoos so he has experience with them a key stand point in my documentary. Sophie Masterman a girl who is approaching the age of going to university but does not think tattoos are a good thing and finally Danielle wood the youngest of the group and the most determined to do more things when she gets to the age of legal consent to do more with her body such as piercing and tattooing. I will have to get actor release forms so that i have written consent from all actors that they have allowed me to shoot them in this film. This form will also be needed for the tattoo studio so i have permission to shoot there as well and promote the business.
When filming on location you take into account to things these are if the location is an interior or exterior location. Simply put outside or inside also the risks you would have to take into account for health and safety reasons so people would not get hurt on set. If you note down the potential hazards in your filming location your minimizing injuries on location. for example an exterior hazard could be branches and twigs on the floor so you could move them to avoid tripping or if you are filming up hill move some where more flat grounded to stop the chance of falling or damaging equipment. Interior would be if you are working in a refurbished building wires or cables could be hanging from the ceiling or water could be dripping both of these hazard could cause you to trip or get shocked.
Taking this into account my location is both exterior as the tattoo shop out side is a clear giant flat path with a podium on the side of the shop it dose not block my path so it is a clear space. The interior is a busy shop as it has two tattooing chairs a sofa and outlets on the side.I asked if we could move some equipment to maximize space and reduce accident. The tattoo artist was more then happy to oblige.
When making my documentary i will follow Ofcoms regulations in which i will not make racial comments or stereotypes that will hurt or may offend any of my audience watching. If there will be any bag language i can either cut it or bleep it so the documentary isnt distasteful or may encourage young viewers to quote any bad language seen in the documentary. While filming this documentary i must stay professional at all times i will not be objective or subject to my interviewee or talk to them unprofessional or talk down to them in anyway. I will stick to the time and dates we agreed upon and if i use any copyrighted music i will use a form to dignify that i do not own this music and i will acknowledge the artist who made this song by giving them full credit at the end of the documentary as well as a written statement.

Inked People (Back up Documentary)
Idea
The documentary is based around the popularity of tattoos and tattoo artists.
Also why are tattoos so popular now what makes them so popular?
Do they have any significance meaning to the person who is being tattooed or are they just there to look cool.
It will go deeper into the tattoos artists life and how much work they put into the tattoo themselves with a behind the scenes look at the tattooist life and why did they choose tattooing as a profession?
Do they feel they could of done something else other then this?
Is this there dream job?
Furthermore i have a few tattoo artist with some interesting stories with interesting life's that a lot of young people can relate to.
Towards the end i will look at the work of the tattoos and get a short conclusion on what the tattoo artist feels about tattoos themselves and how they think tattoos will change in the future.
Synopsis
The documentary will begin with a voice over provided by my self to explain the structure of the documentary its self.
The documentary will follow three different tattoo artists from two different shops who all previously worked together they will all be asked the same premise of questions and i will go into depth about why did they separate from each other also how has tattoos effected themselves as people.
It will go into depth on how they started out and where they hope to go in the future along with what do they think will happen in the future for them.
Audience
The audience for this would be of no specific age or gender it is set for people who have a common interest in tattoos or the idea of getting a tattoo on there body.
if i had to set an age gate i would say if you are of legal age to get a tattoo then that would be it.
from sixteen onwards would be good enough.
Genre
The genre of this documentary is special interest.
Only those people who have an interest for tattoos should watch this documentary.
For a time SLOT
i would put around eight o-clock just around times that soap operas are ending around this time people are looking for something to watch.

Documentary Proposal
Idea
The documentary idea is based around the music industry more importantly a specific sort of genre in the music industry the genre known as "Death metal" or "Post-Hardcore".
More importantly the documentary will cover a few bands who work in this specific industry bands that have been provided to me by a small record company which i am thankful for.
The documentary itself will cover important issues in the music industry such as the hard work and stress that goes into making the music that this band makes.
It will show both the bands perspectives along side the fans perspective.
What i mean by this is how does the music make them feel, how does it affect there lives.
Furthermore it will tackle the more harsh realties of being in a band such as touring and living on the road.
Another harsh reality is the biased attitude and stereotypes that the band get due to the sub genre music they adapted to from the original "rock" genre.
Synopsis
The documentary will follow a few bands that have been provided to me by a small record company. along with a band known as "Martyr Defiled" and there current rise to stardom in the "Post-Hardcore" scene at the time i am writing this they are currently in Holland.
The documentary will follow these bands on there journeys through touring and playing gigs.
To getting to the deeper side of things such as.
Why do they choose this profession?
Who inspired them to do this?
Do they have a passionate reason to make this music?
What are the songs about?
It will have the view of the fans as well as i will interview them after gigs or will make meetings to interview them through the bands social media pages.
The documentary will end on the bands final thoughts on how the music, the band and the fans have encouraged them to continue on with this profession.
Genre
The genre of the documentary will be a special interest documentary.
With some archive footage of bands performances.
Audience
The target audience for this documentary is for young adults and teenagers more imporantly fans of the music and the bands them selfs. The audience is focused on people who adore this music. However i want a bit of controversy so i will ask people who don't so much like this music. there is no specific genre for this music. However due to the musical impact it would focus on a specific subset of stereotypes known as "Moshers,Goth,Punk,Emo and Skater".
If i had to have a time SLOT
for this it would be around 8 o'clock just as the soap operas are about to end.
People are searching for something to watch i would put in on BBC1 or BBC2

Target Audience (Martyr Defiled)
Target Audience (Martyr Defiled)
In this specific documentary my target audience will be directed towards the fans of this specific music type known as "Hardcore" or similar music.
Screamo is used in a lot of different music type in this generation so along with "Hardcore"audiences who listen to another type of screamo music would also be interested in this documentary.
There is no specific age group as this music is listened to be people of an assortment of ages from as young eight and to as old as sixty so there really is no specific age gap.
However for this documentary i would class the age group as young adults from ages eighteen to twenty five as "Martyr Defiled" are currently popular but not to lengths of being world known so this age group fits them perfectly as their music is quite dark and has some dark some lyrics along with some graphic music videos with some disturbing scenes.
Documentary Format 2 (Observational)

As the name states this type of documentary is used as a way to observe to others mainly used in documentaries about wild life or nature this documentary is used to inform and educated others about certain areas in the world.
They can be used to observe other subjects such as news or if told on correct way it can be used in the way of a social experiment
Documentary Idea 2 (Martyr Defiled)
Documentary Idea 2 (Martyr Defiled)
For my second documentary idea i would like to look at local bands in the Manchester area.
However it will be to a specific type of music this will specific genre is known as "Hardcore or Post Hardcore"
Typically called screamo in which the singer or vocalist screams or shouts the words in a sense of anger the music is effect to solve anger problems.
It also has a deep seeded dark passion to the audience it relives stress and helps create some strong music.
The reason i want to do this is to reduce the stereotype that Hardcore bands receive from other people who aren't a fan and call the band no talent singers or just not talented who often thing that this music is a joke and should be stopped.
So i would like to get opinions from the band on why people think this also how hard it is to become a famous "Hardcore" at this time.
I will be speaking to Martyr Defiled and if possible an assortment of other bands they have worked with or have toured with.
